In 1971, the first field team was formed through a specialized research project to compile information and conduct studies of erosion and accretion hotspots along the Nile Delta coast. This initiative aimed to propose suitable solutions for these Coastal phenomena and was a collaborative effort between the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). As part of this project, two research stations were established in Abu Qir and Ras El Bar.<\/p>

In 1973, an Academy President decree state to establishment of a branch of the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, specifically dedicated to coastal protection. This decree stipulated the integration of the project’s technical staff and facilities into the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries – Coastal Protection Branch.<\/p>

Subsequently, in 1983, Presidential Decree No. 135 of 1982 officially incorporated this branch into the Water Research Center within the Ministry of Irrigation, renaming it the Coastal Protection Research Institute. In 1993, Presidential Decree No. 316 was issued to regulate the National Water Research Center, which included the Coastal Research Institute among its research institutes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As the coastal zones of Egypt hosts many natural resources, CoRI emphasizes on Integrated Management Plans (IMP) for sustainable protection and development of the coastal zones.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Coastal Research Institute is responsible for monitoring the status of Egyptian coasts and undertakes field and laboratory studies, as well as fundamental and applied research works, in order to understand the coastal hydrodynamics, to provide innovative solutions and to take precautionary measures for coastal problems along the Egyptian coast.<\/p>

    CoRI is concerned with research and investigation activities to protect and develop the Egyptian coastal zones through the following objectives:<\/p>

      • Conduct research and laboratory studies and field works to study the problems of Egyptian beaches, estuaries, straits and marine facilities. This is done through monitoring sediments transportation and factors affecting this movement to find the most appropriate solutions.<\/li>
      • Recording and analysis of meteorological observations.<\/li>
      • Set of the general planning for protection and development of coastal projects and environmental impact study.<\/li>
      • Utilize physical and numerical models for development of appropriate solutions to coastal problems and their structures as well as to predict the changes that occurred and expected to occur in the future.<\/li>
      • Study the impact of climate change, sea level rise and increase of winter extreme events on inundation of Nile Delta Coasts and low laying areas and conduct adaptation measures studies to coastal changes until 2100.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
