Bridging Science and Practice: Developing Climate-Resilient Flood Risk Management Strategies in Egypt
Session Overview
Day2 26-10-2026
11:30 to 13:00
PICASSO 4
Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events, creating new challenges for water management and disaster risk reduction, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. While Egypt has extensive experience in integrated water resources management, flood risk management planning for rainfall-driven (pluvial) events remains an emerging priority. This technical session presents the outcomes and lessons learned from the collaborative initiative between the Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) of the National Water Research Center (NWRC), Deltares (The Netherlands), and the International Panel on Deltas, Coastal Areas and Islands (IPDC) to strengthen Egypt’s capacity for climate-resilient flood risk management. The collaboration focuses on developing practical approaches for flood hazard and risk assessment through advanced hydrological modelling, GIS-based analysis, climate scenarios, exposure assessment, and stakeholder engagement. The session will showcase the Marsa Matruh pilot study, where rainfall data, topographic information, field surveys, flood modelling, and risk assessment methods were integrated to develop flood risk management guidelines and identify adaptation measures. It will highlight how international knowledge exchange, scientific innovation, and institutional capacity building can support evidence-based decisions and enhance resilience against future extreme events.
