The papyrus plant possesses some substances in its leaves that makes it able to treat contaminated water, due to its special ability to absorb pollutants and reduce the number of bacteria. In addition, the whole growing papyrus has a good economic value. An experiment was launched at the Lake Manzala Water Research Station by the Drainage Research Institute (DRI) of the National Water Research Center (NWRC) in Port Said Governorate. The objective of the experiment was to assess the efficiency of the papyrus plant in removing pollutants from the drainage water. The plant was cultivated in an experimental field with clay soils to treat the water of Bahr Al-Baqar drain. In addition, the plant was cultivated in glass tanks with three layers of gravel each has a different gravel size to treat agricultural drainage water. The applied treatment system is a surface wetland.
