The National Water Research Center (NWRC) is the research body of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI), where NWRC's research institutes and units are specialized in different fields of water sciences and water resources. There are 12 research institutes affiliate to NWRC, in addition to the Central Laboratory for Environmental Monitoring (CLEQM) and the Strategic Research Unit (SRU). Due to the importance of cohering between research and application in scientific research to achieve the optimum benefit and development, NWRC supervises the work of its research institutes and units through 25 research stations affiliate to 6 research institutes; namely: Water Management Research Institute (12 research stations), Coastal Research Institute (4 stations), Research Institute for Groundwater (3 stations), Drainage Research Institute (2 stations), Channel Maintenance Research Institute (2 stations), Strategic Research Unit (Laboratory for Seawater and Brackish Water Desalination), and finally the Water Studies and Research Complex in Toshka. These research stations and laboratories are distributed all over the Egyptian governorates. The research activities and experiments carried out at these research stations cover a wide range of water research topics. They support the NWRC's research plan, especially with regards to the national mega-projects that serve the development goals. These activities include: Carrying out marine measurements along the Egyptian shoreline. Saltwater desalination studies. Fish farming, control of aquatic weeds, and production of biogas from aquatic weeds. Reuse of drainage water for irrigation. Experimenting sub-surface drainage systems. Studying the water requirements and evaluating the modern irrigation systems. Conducting artificial groundwater recharging experiments.
