Rethinking “Safe Reuse”: Decentralized Nature-Based Solutions for Managing Hidden Risks in Non-Conventional Water Reuse chain
Session Overview
Day1 25-10-2026
12:30 to 14:00
Louvre 3
This session will explore how non-conventional water reuse in agriculture can be scaled in a way that is both technically robust and institutionally feasible, with a focus on decentralized and nature-based solutions. Building on ongoing work under the Water Development and Partnership Programme (WDPP), the session will present hybrid treatment approaches for agricultural drainage water, irrigation flows, and landfill leachate. These systems combine enhanced nature-based solutions with locally available adsorbent materials, offering adaptable and cost-conscious options for different country contexts, including Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco. Beyond technical design, the session will focus on enabling conditions for scaling. This includes governance arrangements, financing considerations, and pathways for integrating decentralized solutions into national water planning. The discussion will highlight how such approaches can complement existing infrastructure. The session will explore how such approaches can realistically contribute to safer reuse practices, particularly in decentralized and resource-constrained settings where centralized treatment is not feasible to contribute to more resilient and resource-efficient agricultural systems. The work of this sessions is an ongoing efforts from SafeAgroMENA
