Climate Change Impacts on Urban Infrastructure & Building Stability in Alexandria, Egypt

Session Overview

Day4 28-10-2026

14:00 to 15:30

PICASSO 1

Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city and one of the oldest coastal metropolitan areas in the Mediterranean, faces increasing risks associated with climate change, rapid urbanization, aging infrastructure, and intensive coastal development. Sea level rise, more frequent storm surges, coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion, rising groundwater levels, and extreme rainfall events are placing unprecedented pressure on the city’s built environment. Recent observations indicate increasing occurrences of building distress, foundation deterioration, localized flooding, pavement failures, and degradation of coastal infrastructure. These challenges are interconnected and require an integrated multidisciplinary approach that combines coastal engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, environmental sciences, urban planning, and disaster risk management. This workshop aims to establish a common scientific and technical platform for understanding these interacting processes and identifying practical adaptation strategies to improve the resilience of Alexandria’s urban infrastructure depending on actual data measurements.
