Groundwater Hydrology

The National Water Research Center (NWRC), through its Research Institute for Groundwater (RIGW), serves as Egypt’s premier institution for groundwater research, management, and policy support. As the national center of excellence in this field, RIGW provides critical expertise to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI), government agencies, and private stakeholders.

Core Functions of RIGW:

Technical Advisory & Planning: Conducts feasibility studies, strategic groundwater assessments, and hydrogeological mapping.

Monitoring & Risk Management: Tracks groundwater quantity/quality and evaluates sustainability risks.

Infrastructure Oversight: Supervises well design, drilling, and wellhead protection zones (WHPAs) to secure drinking water sources.

Exploratory Research: Addresses knowledge gaps in data-scarce regions through innovative studies.

Environmental Integration: Embeds water quality safeguards and sustainability measures into development projects.

Capacity Building: RIGW strengthens national groundwater governance through hands-on training programs and applied research initiatives, fostering expertise across all aspects of groundwater science.

Legacy & Impact:  With decades of multidisciplinary experience, RIGW drives Egypt’s sustainable groundwater management—ensuring resource resilience, operational efficiency, and long-term security for future generations.
