NWRC Profile

NWRC Overview

For half a century, the National Water Research Center (NWRC) has been Egypt’s cornerstone in water science and sustainable resource management. Established in 1975 under the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI), this flagship research organization celebrates 50 years of innovation in 2025, marking its enduring legacy as a Center of Excellence in addressing Egypt’s water challenges through cutting-edge research, policy guidance, and technological advancement.

As the nation’s premier water research entity, NWRC integrates 12 specialized institutes, a UNESCO Category-2 Central Laboratory for Environmental Quality Monitoring (CLEQM), and a Strategic Research Unit to drive solutions for water scarcity, climate resilience, and efficient resource use. Its vast monitoring network—comprising 200+ hydrological stations and 435 water quality checkpoints—provides critical data, while advanced facilities like hydraulic research models, climate impact labs, and a state-of-the-art desalination plant push the boundaries of water science.

With 510+ experts, NWRC merges five decades of institutional knowledge with modern innovations, shaping national policies and fostering global partnerships. Celebrating its golden jubilee, the center reaffirms its commitment to securing Egypt’s water future through research, advisory services, and capacity building, cementing its role as a leader in water science for the next 50 years and beyond.
