River Hydraulics & Hydrology
The Nile Research Institute (NRI) and the Hydraulics Research Institute (HRI), both operating under the National Water Research Center (NWRC), play key roles in advancing Egypt’s water management strategies. NRI leads scientific efforts for the protection and sustainable development of the Nile River, conducting comprehensive studies on sediment transport, water quality, erosion, and sedimentation from Lake Nasser to the Mediterranean. The institute also evaluates the impact of hydraulic structures and develops policies for sustainable river management. Meanwhile, HRI focuses on optimizing water resources management by conducting technical studies on irrigation structures, hydraulic behavior of waterways, and river morphology. The institute is also instrumental in calibrating water measurement devices, including irrigation pumps and flow meters, and providing technical support to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation through its regional training center, helping to build the capacity of ministry engineers. Together, these institutes drive innovative research and provide critical support to ensure the sustainable management of Egypt’s water resources.
