Water Resources Management
The Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI), operating under the umbrella of the National Water Research Center (NWRC), strives to be the principal authority for research in all areas related to water resources. Its mission is to innovate and advance research in water resource management on both the local and regional levels, with a focus on the Arab world and Nile Basin countries. As part of its mandate, WRRI conducts comprehensive hydrological studies to develop and conserve both traditional and non-traditional water resources, including evaluating their economic feasibility and formulating sustainable management plans. The institute also focuses on optimizing methods for predicting Nile River inflows, assessing potential water extractions, and proposing suitable policies to ensure effective water management. In surface water studies, WRRI undertakes water harvesting projects, flood and rainfall protection strategies, and water resource development initiatives with Nile Basin countries, along with capacity building and technical support for monitoring networks across Egypt. In groundwater studies, WRRI assesses groundwater potential and safe extraction limits to ensure the sustainable use of this critical resource, conducting hydrogeological assessments to evaluate aquifer capacities and issuing well permits in various regions. Additionally, the institute plays a crucial role in formulating water policies that support agricultural productivity through horizontal and vertical expansion. WRRI also evaluates the potential impacts of proposed or ongoing projects within the Nile Basin countries, recommending strategies to maintain and protect Egypt’s water requirements. Through its research and expertise, WRRI supports NWRC’s vision of sustainable water resource management and contributes to national water security strategies.
