NWRC President and Hydraulics, Construction, and Channel Maintenance Research Institutes Directors Participate in High-Level Ministerial Meeting to Review Suez Canal Irrigation Water System

Participation of Prof. Dr. Sherif Mohamedy, President of the National Water Research Center, along with the Directors of the Research Institutes of Hydraulics – Construction– Channel Maintenance, in the extended meeting held by Prof. Dr. Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, to review the status of the water system within the Suez Canal irrigation area and ensure the provision of water needs across the entire command area of the canal.

Ministry of Water Resources & Irrigation:

The Ministers of Water Resources and Irrigation, Local Development, Housing, and Agriculture, the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, and the Governor of Suez discuss the state of the water system within the Suez Canal and the provision of drinking water in the city of Suez. H.E. Prof. Dr. Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, chaired this meeting.

Prof. Sewilam:

-The number of encroachments on the Suez Canal makes the total amount of water required exceed the canal’s capacity to meet it, and the encroachments must inevitably be removed.

– Coordinate between all parties to achieve optimal management of the water system within the Suez Canal. The Ministry has made great efforts to achieve this goal through canal purification works, monitoring compliance with shifts, identifying and removing illegal intakes and openings, and monitoring sandy lands’ compliance with modern irrigation systems.

Dr. Manal Awad: Continuous coordination with the executive authorities in Suez Governorate to remove any encroachments on the Suez Canal’s grounds within the governorate, and we will continue to periodically follow up on the encroachment removal file.

Eng. Sherif El-Sherbiny affirms the Ministry of Housing’s readiness to provide all forms of support through the Holding Company for Drinking Water and Wastewater and its subsidiary in Suez Governorate.

Prof. Alaa Farouk: Form a committee to monitor and take the necessary measures to convert the sandy lands within the Suez Canal to modern irrigation systems.

Lieutenant General Osama Rabie: Coordinate with state institutions to develop services provided to citizens in the Canal cities, and the Authority’s water purification plant in Suez is operating at high efficiency without any technical problems.
