The activities of the second day of the introductory event for Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Within the framework of the National Water Research Center’s continued commitment to monitoring international developments in the field of climate change, strengthening the role of scientific research in supporting adaptation efforts, and assessing associated risks—particularly in vital sectors related to water resources—Prof. Dr. Sherif Mohamady, President of the National Water Research Center, participated, upon a kind invitation from H.E. Prof. Dr. the Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, in the activities of the second day of the introductory event for Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which focuses on climate change impacts, adaptation, and risks.

The event was held on Monday, 2 February 2026, at the Sofitel Nile Corniche Hotel in Cairo, with broad participation from representatives of relevant national and international institutions.

The event activities addressed the theme of “Cities and Climate Change.” The opening session featured remarks by the National Focal Point to the IPCC, the Co-Chair of Working Group II, a representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cairo, in addition to a keynote address by H.E. Prof. Dr. the Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment.

On the sidelines of the event, H.E. Prof. Dr. the Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment held a meeting with Prof. Dr. Sherif Mohamady and a number of heads of research centers in Egypt, as well as participants in climate change–related studies. During the meeting, views were exchanged on ways to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest, and mechanisms for leveraging scientific research to support national policies on climate change adaptation were discussed.

During the meeting, appreciation was expressed for the prominent role played by the National Water Research Center—particularly the Coastal Research Institute—in developing and implementing innovations for coastal protection using nature-based solutions and environmentally friendly materials.

The participation of the President of the National Water Research Center underscores the Center’s commitment to supporting integration between scientific research and decision-making, keeping pace with climate issues related to water resources and urban development, and contributing to addressing growing climate challenges while strengthening pathways toward sustainable development.
