NWRC and Groundwater Sector Collaborate on Groundwater Research Using AI and GIS to Support Irrigation System 2.0

In line with the NWRC’s commitment to continuous follow-up on ongoing research studies and to ensuring their alignment with the Ministry’s goals for the second generation of the Irrigation System 2.0, a meeting was held on, Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.

The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Sherif Mohamady, President of the National Water Research Center, and attended by:

Eng. Aboubakr El-Rouby, Head of the Groundwater Sector

Dr. Manal Abdelmonem, Director of the Groundwater Research Institute

Dr. Heba Abdelaziz, Deputy Head of the Groundwater Sector

Dr. Eman Noufal, Deputy Director of the Groundwater Research Institute

Eng. Mohamed Mostafa, Director General of the General Directorate of Groundwater in South Valley – Qena

Dr. Mamdouh El-Satawy, from the Groundwater Research Institute

Also participating in the meeting were:

Dr. Ezz Eldin Kamel and Dr. Ahmed Samir from the Minister’s Office

Dr. Heba Kamal from the Technical Office of the NWRC’s President.

The meeting focused on a preliminary research study titled:

“Identifying Groundwater Well Locations Using High-Resolution Satellite Imagery”

The capabilities of using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) were presented as advanced tools for groundwater management.

By the end of the meeting, an agreement was reached on the upcoming steps between the NWRC and the Groundwater Sector to advance this pioneering study.
