Scientific Innovation Competition “Smart Telemetry for Water Monitoring”
As part of the celebrations commemorating 50 years since the establishment of the National Water Research Center (NWRC) — a premier institution at the forefront of research in water resources management, water quality, and river hydraulics — the NWRC is pleased to launch a national scientific competition for young researchers and engineers under the theme:
“Smart Telemetry for Water Monitoring.”
Background
The National Water Research Center (NWRC), the research arm of Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI), is a center of excellence recognized for its innovation in water resource management. Established as a national institute in 1975, though its roots date back to 1947, NWRC has been pivotal in shaping sustainable water practices for Egypt and the region through applied research and capacity building. It comprises 12 specialized research institutes, a Central Laboratory for Environmental Quality Monitoring, a Strategic Research Unit, and a Capacity Building Unit, focusing on critical areas such as irrigation, hydraulics, hydrology, sediment transport, water quality, climate change, and coastal protection. As it approaches its 50th anniversary, NWRC continues to drive innovation and address water challenges locally and regionally.

![]() Advancing Coastal Safety and Resilience in EgyptCreated at: 2024-03-01 The Safe Coasts project is one of several initiatives under the Joint Cooperation in Applied Research (JCAR), a collaboration between Egypt and the Netherlands focused on water management research. Funded by the Dutch Embassy in Egypt, it connects researchers to develop evidence-based solutions. The project partners Egypt's National Water Research Center and Deltares to support the Shore Protection Authority (SPA) in managing coastal zones. It addresses climate change, sea level rise, and land subsidence, which threaten infrastructure and safety. A study on rip currents was conducted at Nakheel Beach in Alexandria. |
![]() Integrated Rural Development Programme for Egypt "EU-ZIRA3A".Created at: 2024-01-01 This project supports Egypt's Sustainable Agricultural Development Strategy (SADS) in Sohag, Assiut, and Beni Suef, aiming to enhance smallholder farmers' livelihoods through sustainable rural development, with a focus on water management, agricultural productivity, and opportunities for women and youth. It seeks to strengthen the capacities of Egyptian authorities, expand economic and agricultural opportunities, and promote sustainable resource management through a participatory approach that ensures stakeholder ownership and long-term impact. |
![]() Greening the Margins: NUS for Mediterranean AgroecosystemsCreated at: 2024-04-01 Desertification and freshwater scarcity are major challenges for agriculture in the Mediterranean region. To address this, there's a need to introduce crop species more tolerant to drought and capable of growing in degraded, marginal lands. Neglected and underutilized species (NUS), adapted to arid climates, offer higher resilience and can improve soil water balance and carbon storage. These crops provide small farmers with economic opportunities by turning abandoned lands into productive areas. The VENUS project aims to showcase the environmental and economic benefits of cultivating low-water-demand NUS in dry, saline, and nutrient-poor conditions. |
